Holiday Artist Market at the Arts Council of Henderson County

The Arts Council of Henderson County’s annual Holiday Artist Market opens Friday, November 27 with a reception in The Arts Council’s D. Samuel Neill Gallery, 538 North Main Street, 2nd Floor in downtown Hendersonville, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.

The Market will be open through Saturday, December 19, 2009, with special holiday gallery hours, Monday – Saturday, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.  This will be a great opportunity to find those one-of-a-kind gifts for those special and sometimes hard-to-buy-for people on your shopping list.

Items available for purchase will include fine art, folk art and crafts– all will make great gifts and are reasonably priced.

Artists include local and regional favorites like Janet Jacobson, Susan Barrett (award winner at both the 2009 Bring Us Your Best and Art on Main shows), Kate Stockman, and Kim Adams.  Completing the list of talented artists and artisans are Maxine Tatreau, Barbara Stock, Cheryl Stippich, Susan Webb Tregay, Leslie “Lil” Lauer, Walter Chase, Beverly Gable, Diane Fitzgerald, Kenneth D. Peterson, Constance Vlahoulis, Oshima Keiji, Wesley Corn (award winner at 2009 Bring Us Your Best), Susan Welsh, and Ben Freeman, whose work was the featured art for the 2009 Art on Main poster and merchandise.

Oshima Bamboo School Opening Soon!

Presents a free, hands on workshop on the proper Care of a Bamboo Grove
May 30th Sat. 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
This Hands On Program will be held at the National Park Service ’Cowpens
National Battlefield’ near Cowpens, SC.
Morning Session
9:00 a.m. at the picnic area a National Park Service representative will
provide a presentation on the history of the park and an overview of
management goals.
9:45 a.m. Keiji Oshima from Oshima Bamboo School will lead a short, easy
walk through a portion of the four acre bamboo grove where he will discuss
bamboo growth, bamboo age, proper care, and maintenance of the grove, etc.
Lunch at the picnic area. Bring your own lunch, drink, water - to picnic
table near by.
Afternoon session
1:00-3:00 Keiji Oshima will demonstrate techniques of cutting, handling and
caring for bamboo poles and the proper way to trim branches and clean up
properly.
Bring your hand saw, and gloves to do Hands On Techniques
It may be possible for us to take bamboo poles home after the Hands On
Program.

From I-85 northbound, take exit 83. Turn left, on Hwy 110. Drive about 8
miles. At the intersection for Hwys 110, 221, and 11, turn right. The
park is about a half mile on the right.
From I-85 southbound, take exit 92 at Gaffney, west toward Chesnee on
Hwy 11. The park is about 10 miles on the left.
From I-26 eastbound, take exit 5, east toward Chesnee on Hwy 11. The
park is about 20 miles on the right.
From I-26 westbound, take I-85 North, take exit 83. Turn left, on Hwy

Grass towers

The nursery’s sign is a weathered slab of wood, bearing three Japanese characters. Translation: “Bamboo Moon.” Appropriate, it would seem, for a business with the word “Haiku” in its name.
